Times it wasn't so easy going about tricking Raidou into having fun, because of how sharp he was. Not an easy nut to crack, either, the way he retreated into politeness when the going got casual. The second time around with the zashiki-warashi cases, which were a fine ploy from any angle, he just folded away his reward without saying a thing.

"Great work as always," was Narumi's line.

At dinner Raidou didn't touch his rice, in a manner that couldn't be nonchalant, given the particulars. After dinner he set the bowl on the kitchen stoop.

Narumi looked over across a fold of the evening news. "Not going to finish that?"

"For the spirit of the house," said Raidou. Nonchalantly, but you could tell how he meant it.

Of course Narumi could keep a straight face, too. He nodded, and in the morning, when Raidou came down with his schoolbag, called him over to the kitchen entrance just as nonchalantly.

"Look."

Raidou joined him in surveying the bowl. Nearly a third of the rice was gone.

"I see," he intoned, breathing out a little. Smiling wasn't his style. "It must have been hungry."
