No, they hadn't the time. The only time they had was time to get a move on.

"Time to get a move on, Toots," Gouto was saying. His ears dipped a little. "I understand, sure. But... a Moh Shuuvuu? They're a simple enough catch."

They were. But all the others, the ones Raidou could have caught, were simpler still to kill. Moh Shuuvuu were a close tribe, stubborn, small, unreasonable. They didn't like seeing their kind tamed by humans. But she had fought every one of her own sisters gladly, always at her master's side, without so much as a sigh.

Raidou didn't get a move on until he had walked the length and breadth of the darkness again, all without another word from Gouto. This seemed like a kindness, since Gouto was kind, but Raidou wasn't all that good at telling.

It was Anzu that spotted her at last. "SUMMONER MUST LOOK," it roared. "FRIEND? FRIEND?"

Moh Shuuvuu feared the dark. Unlike Anzu, her kind had no night vision. She had been huddling against a slight bay in the rock, away in from the feral things that lived underground, and hid her face even as Raidou approached. He stood still until she turned to look at him, giving a slight sound of recognition.

"Ah... I think I got lost..." After a moment, she giggled. And seemed to sigh, only just then, in straits like that.

And though at any other time it would have been imprudent, Raidou held out his arms. Moh Shuuvuu didn't make another sound, just rose into the air for him.

"GOOD. I AM HUNGRY." Anzu was watching her.

"Friend," Raidou told it around the small hands brushing his cheeks, the brim of his hat. "Do we kill friends?"

Anzu's wings gave a pair of ponderous beats. "NO?"

Moh Shuuvuu shifted weight on Raidou's shoulders. She was shaking her head fiercely, and sobbing in what could only be indignation.

Raidou reached up to calm her. He said, "No. We do not."
