how to tie a tie
"The blue," decided Narumi at last. "Looks smart, don't you think?"
Attending to his own reflection, Raidou nodded. To him, the current swatch of color held against his face effected no real difference from the brown one earlier, or the one that was vaguely pink, but even if Raidou himself lacked the sense for this sort of decision he certainly didn't want Narumi to think he looked stupid.
"There." Standing just behind him, Narumi arranged the collar of Raidou's shirt, still overcrisp with starch, and let the blue tie drape about it. "Want me to show you how this works?"
Raidou knew how to tie a tie, but he stayed still under the hands resting lightly on his shoulders. He saw no reason to speak up and deprive Narumi of something that, for whatever reason, seemed important. He kept his eye on their reflections, and in a move that struck him as quite bold even made his face frown a little, to demonstrate confusion.
Narumi laughed, but coming from him it didn't seem like a rude thing to do. It just seemed to simplify everything all at once. "Right then," he began, and adjusted the tie around Raidou's collar, crossing the ends.
Raidou started out in step with the instructions, but ended up watching Narumi's fingers as they drifted over the rich length of fabric, purposeful and slow. Wherever they touched, Raidou could sense the little hairs on his neck standing straight up, as if in premonition of an ambush, or a thunderstorm. And all the while Raidou kept trying not to think about ambushes or thunderstorms, trying his best to concentrate, but all his thoughts supplied was the opinion that blue was probably a very good color, after all.
At length Narumi's hands were gone, whereupon his reflection stepped back a bit, cheerful with the intent to congratulate his own efforts.
"All sixes," he concluded, doing so, and nodded at them both. "Remind me not to stand next to you in public, Raidou, or you'll put me to shame. Do you have it down now?"
It was not a difficult question, but Raidou paused in responding. In the meanwhile, he hoped Narumi would provide an answer on his own, as Narumi very often did, so that Raidou wouldn't have to go ahead and lie all over again.
